I love TED Talks. They are quick sessions on various topics that you can watch and learn in less than 20 minutes. So I thought ... what a better way to share with you guys all of the amazing benefits of a plant-based diet than to share with you some of my favorite TED Talks on this topic?!?!
The following TED Talks will inspire you, challenge you, and maybe even compel you to go plant-based (even it is only for Meatless Monday!) Most of these speakers are doctors and they offer FREE vegan diet programs on their websites for you to give this lifestyle a try (you will love the benefits!!) I have added all of the links below each video. So grab a nice warm cup of tea, sit back, and enjoy!!! And don't forget to keep an open mind to learn and challenge your current believes on health and diet - trust me on this one!
(quick tip: when I watch YouTube videos, at the bottom right-hand corner of the video I click on settings -> speed and adjust it to either 1.25 or 1.5 to make it faster.)
1. The power of plant-based eating | Dr. Joanne Kong
Dr. Joanne Kong inspires the listeners to take a second look at how their food choices are impacting your health, the sustainability of the planet, and their level of compassion. She encourages you to open your mind and hearts to the power of plant-based eating. I really enjoyed listening to her. Dr. Kong has a soft and warm voice, but a strong message to go with it.
2. Plant-strong & healthy living | Rip Esselstyn
Rip Esselstyn, a former firefighter and author of The Engine 2 Diet, advocates a plant-strong diet to combat chronic diseases. Esselstyn shares the story of how he inspired his fellow firefighting crew at the Austin Engine 2 station to follow a plant-based diet and dramatically heal their health. The transformation his crew went through can't be argued to be anything less then inspiring.
I had the pleasure of meeting Esselstyn last year at a workshop he hosted on his upcoming book at Whole Foods. He had a strong presence and a lot of knowledge to share! On his website http://engine2diet.com/ , Esselstyn and his team offer a free 7 days plant-based challenge worth checking out!
3. Power foods for the brain | Neal Barnard
If you are a person that likes scientific evidence, you will like this ted talk. Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health. In this video. Dr Barnard explain the numerous health benefits of a plant-based diet with the scientific studies to back it up.
Dr. Barnard is part of the Physicians Committee, a group of more than 12,000 physicians that is leading a revolution in medicine - putting a new focus on health and compassion. On their website, you can find a free 21 day vegan kickstart with daily recipes, a meal plan guide, and nutritional information. I have used this program with my health coaching clients and I highly recommend it.
4. The food we were born to eat | John McDougall
In this talk, Dr. John McDougall suggests that starch-based diets are the foods humans were born to eat. He has been studying, writing, and speaking out about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 40 years and is a bestselling author of several titles, including The Starch Solution. In this video, Dr McDougall shares his years of experience as a doctor and how he was able to reverse so many commonly seen diseases by changing his patient's diets to a plant-based one.
Dr McDougall hosts a 10 days live-in program numerous times a year that takes place at the Flamingo Resort and Spa in Santa Rosa, CA. Most participants are able to stop all unnecessary medications, avoid surgery, improve their appearance and regain lost fitness. He also offers a free plant-based starter program on his website with a 10 days meal plan.
5. A vegan bodybuilding experiment | Joshua Knox
Joshua Knox, a Google employee, shares his story of going vegan for a week as a challenge with a couple of his friends, and how that turned into 2.5 years eating a plant-based diet now.
